The organisers of the IAAF label Okpekpe International 10km road race have launched app to help fans, participants, friends and family to follow the progress of the race.
A statement released by the organisers said the 5th edition of the race has been scheduled to hold on May 13 in Okpekpe, Edo State.
Diran Mabo, the Information Technology and Social Media Coordinator for the race said the tracking app, the first to be launched for a road race in Nigeria would offer mobile features designed to address three core digital needs.
These are information delivery, sponsor activation and race day experience.
“This is a completely new experience we have designed to engage the runners and the fans, either coming for the race or who wishing to find out from any part of the world update on the race,’’ said Mabo.
“If you an athlete or a fun seeker running for fun or Charity in the event, you can keep fans, friends and family up-to-date on your performance with the live tracking app.
“It allows friends and family to track real-time activities and progress of athletes during the race. The App also helps at ensuring a safe event by monitoring the field of participants during the race.
“There will be an online map with live positioning of participants, live positioning updates as well as live leader board to show the position of the top 10.’’
The App which is available on iPhone and Android App stores, according to Mabo would be powered by MYLAPS Experience Lab, a division of MYLAPS Sports Timing.
It would be focusing on the development of Web and App services for sports events, participants and spectators in order to create a more complete and streamlined sporting experience.
“Each Okpekpe road race runner will have a device on their numbered bibs, which tracks their location as the move around the race area,’’ Mabo added.
“You’ll be given notifications of things going on around you, weather updates and messages about who is leading the race.
“In fact split times and finishing positions will be updated as the race progresses and all the first aid points and drinks stations are included on the interactive map,’’ explained a delighted Mabo.’’
The Okpekpe international 10km road race is coordinated by Pamodzi Sports Marketing, leaders in sports marketing and hospitality business in Nigeria.
It is the first and only road race in Nigeria that has been granted full membership of Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and recognised as one of the races with an IAAF label status in West Africa. ##
