The Enugu State Government has pledged to procure fertilisers at subsidised rates and make them available early to the farmers in the state.
The Commissioner of Agriculture, Mr Mike Eneh, said on Monday that fertiliser subsidy was captured in the 2017 budget of the state.
Eneh said the government would procure enough fertilisers to go round the 17 local governments in the state.
He warned that sharp practices in the distribution of the fertilisers would not be tolerated.
“The state ministry of agriculture has been directed to ensure that these fertilisers were available to our farmers at subsidised rates before the middle of April.
“This is to enable our farmers to confront the issue of massive food production aggressively with seriousness,” he said.
Eneh said that arrangements had been made to ensure sincere and timely distribution of the fertilisers as soon as they were supplied and that the government would not spare anybody found sabotaging the process.
He explained that the ministry believed that the plan would boost massive food production this year. ##
