Awka, July 10, 2018 (MOI) Ace Movie Maker and Director, Chris Obi-Rapu has berated some Nigerian movie makers for putting personal gains ahead of professionalism in churning out movies for public consumption.
Obi-Rapu, who paid a courtesy call on Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Mr C. Don Adinuba, said when a number of them rallied to create Nollywood in the ‘90s, they did so with such productions of home videos such as, ‘Living in Bondage,’ ‘Taboo,’ ’Circle of Doom’ and ‘Devil’s Passion,’.
However, the paramount objective was to boost socio-cultural norms of Ndi Igbo.
“In 1992 before I left Nigeria for the U.S., Nollywood was created out of those films and they were all shot in Igbo language because we believe we needed to bring back the language to our people,” he said.
The movie maker, however, said that the original objective was now being derailed.
“But, I will be ready to get back on track through collaboration with any south east Government, particularly Anambra, if they will assist to create the right environment for this to thrive.
“I think we can start small by creating production centres, equipped with studios for production home videos.
“We can also commence the training of movie makers, who should be equipped with the right skills and philosophy, so as to understand the overall objective of good movie making and directing.
“I plan to do something on Igbo that will seek to bring back Igbo language and culture so as to properly reposition us for the next century.
“I want to restructure and re-engineer the Igbo mindset and thinking, so as to beat off the challenges of the 21st century and we want to use movies to achieve these.
“The productions will be transmitted on my latest channel —nollywoodglobal.com,” Obi-Rapu said.
According to him it is sad that Nigeria has not met the fourth stage of Industrial revolution of the world, instead we are still grappling to meet with the demands of the first revolution.
“The world has gone into computers, Innovative internet Technology, Aeronautic Engineering but we are still battling with making our hospitals to work for the health benefits of the people.”
“A deliberately well-planned collaboration will help us to achieve the Cultural Revolution.’’ (MOI)
