Obiano visits flood victim’s family, promises intervention

Nnewi (Nnewi North LGA), Aug. 2, 2018 (MOI) Gov. Willie Obiano paid condolence visit to family of a flood victim, Mr Chiagoziem Ofiaeli at Egbu Umuenem, Otolo Nnewi.

The disaster took place on July 25.

Gov. Obiano told the Ofiaeli family of Egbu Umuenem that he came to see things for himself and promised them that he would ensure that the victim’s remains would retreived.

The governor also visited the point his drowning at the Eziogwugu Market Square/Ebenator Hall Road Eziogwugu for on the spot assessment of the road that was flooded.

Addressing the people of the area at the scene of the incident, Obiano expressed shock at how the flood swept off a 24-year-old man, who was six feet tall as late Ofiaeli.

He directed rescue workers to join the men of Road Safety, Nigerian Civil Defence and the Ministry of Works at the scene of the incident to ensure that the victim’s remains were found.

Gov. Obiano, however, promised Ndi Anambra that Government would reconstruct the road.

The victim’s father, Pastor Ugochukwu Ofiaeli, who spoke to the newsmen, affirmed that his son Chiagoziem, drowned at Eziogwugu Market Road Junction.

Mr Ofiaeli said his son was returning home after attending bible study at about 6.30 pm on the fateful day.

He thanked the governor for his visit to see things for himself and for promising to bring workers that would find remains of his son.

He also added that the Eziogwugu/Awka Etiti Road was always flooded as high as two feet whenever there was torrential rainfall.

A former President of Umuzu NGO Otolo Nnewi, Mr Christian Mbamalu said that drowning of people due to torrential rainfall at Eziogwugu/Awka Etiti Road was now worrisome.

“The problem of people drowning from the communities of Egbu/Umuzu/ Eziogwugu had become an annual issue, and Chiagoziem Ofiaeli’s case was the 6th in the number of such cases,’’ Mbamalu noted.

He explained that one ‘Baba Usu’ narrowly escaped death by drowning as he was rescued by brave villagers last year, while the community lost a 10 year-old-girl to flooding a few days before Baba Usu’s case.

He thanked Gov. Obiano for his visit to the Umuzu/Eziogwugu/ Egbu Umuenem Communities Roads and for promising to reconstruct them.

Mr Mbamalu also used the opportunity to appeal for the reconstruction of Abada/Eziogwugu/Awka Etiti Road, St. Peter /Umuzu/All Saints/Awka Etiti Road and Transformer Umuzu/Check Point Egbu Umuenem Road in order to save the communities from flooding. (MOI)
