Anambra State Waste Management Agency (ASWAMA) says it has concluded arrangements to engage the services of Nnamdi Azikiwe University students, Awka in maintaining healthy environment within the institution.
Managing Director, ASWAMA, Mr Amaechi Akorah announced this on Sept. 7, while receiving the executive of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at his Awka office.
Mr Akorah expressed displeasure at indiscriminate disposal of refuse, especially by traders in the various markets in Awka and environs urging Ndi Anambra to make judicious use of receptacles closer to them.
He commended the commitment of Gov. Willie Obiano in creating a healthy environment to promote healthy living in the state.
The MD explained that the empowered students should work to sanitise the institution’s premises and Ifite-Awka environs, in line with agenda of the present administration.
President SUG, Ikenna Igwebuike said they were ready to partner ASWAMA in accomplishing the tasks.
“We created a Directorate of Environmental Matters and commenced campaigns for environmental cleanliness, because `cleanliness is next to godliness’.
“We have created Ifite Presidents’ Forum, comprising all the faculties and departmental presidents in the institution and we are ready to partner with the Agency.
Igwebuike adds: “the students have constituted themselves as `Ambassadors’ of environmental cleanliness and we will extend it beyond the institution.
“The campaign is to create awareness on the need to dispose every waste within receptacles closer to them. We want to change the people’s mindset.’’
A presentation of an award to Mr Akorah for his efficiency and prompt response to evacuation of refuse added glamour to the occasion. (MOI)
