Tricycles in Anambra to fitted with security codes, says Transport commissioner

Transport Commissioner, Mr Afam Mbanefo has unveiled the state Government’s plan to register every tricycle in the state.

This means that all tricycles would henceforth carry security codes, which would be inscribed at the back of the tricycle by the ministry of Transport.

Mbanefo said this during his meeting with tricycle stakeholders present at Transport Ministry’s Conference Hall within the Jerome Udoji Secretariat Complex, Awka.The commissioner noted that the government had directed him to control reckless driving among riders, stop illegal ticketing and illegal task forces and halt driving against traffic as well as stop tricycles from plying on the expressways.

He explained that the security codes would enable an easy tracing of any tricycle involved in any form of criminal activities through the Ministry’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Control Centre.

Mbanefo also cautioned the illegal tricycle operators in the state to register with the ministry or have their vehicles impounded.

The commissioner enjoined the Task force to move into action after a two week notice, stressing that every tricycle operating in the state must be in uniform colours.

And also gave a week period of grace for those, who had newly purchased their tricycle to be painted in Anambra colours and as wll as obtain their registration codes.

Chairman, Tricycle Anambra State, Obiorah Sylvester, on behalf of his unit chairmen, praised the Transport commissioner for his efforts at promoting security among tricycle riders.

He also promised their union’s support in ensuring protection among individuals entering tricycles in their day to day activities and to move the Anambra Transport sector forward.

In attendance was the acting permanent secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Nkiru Okonkwo, political appointees in the ministry and state commandant ATMA.
