Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr Simeon Onyemaechi has hailed Gov. Willie Obiano for providing Standard Quality Healthcare System in the state over the last seven years.Dr Onyemaechi, while being interviewed by a media team on the achievements of Gov. Obiano who on March 17, marked his seven years in the saddle as Governor.

“The Governor has made a remarkable progress in the Health Sector by equipping all state health facilities in the 21 Local Government Area (LGAs) in Anambra.’’

Apart from providing standard health buildings, other facilities provided include Ambulances and Solar-powered Direct Drive Refrigeration.

Dr Onyemaechi noted that even though Anambra State had a working health system, Gov. Obiano over the last seven years recorded major improvements and instituted standard administrative procedures in the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.

He said that the Primary Healthcare Centres did not have an organised Administrative System which made the current Government to introduce an Agency known as Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHCDA) to coordinate affairs of the PHC Centres in the state.

ASPHCDA is charged with coordinating all the affairs of the Primary Healthcare Centres in all LGAs in the state.

Dr Onyemaechi noted that at least 63 primary health centres across the state had undergone total rehabilitation and were fully equipped with hospital equipment.

The special adviser said that Healthcare workers had a salary raise of about 40 per cent, bringing them at par with what their counterparts in the Federal Civil Service earn.

“This implies that now, Doctors in Hospitals no longer go on strike unlike in the past which shows that Gov. Obiano understands that the welfare of Healthcare workers is essential for quality healthcare delivery in Anambra.

Dr Onyemaechi observed that before the coming of Gov Obiano student doctors experienced difficulties in graduating from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH) after about 10 years because of non-accreditation of the medical unit of the institution.

“Immediately Gov. Obiano assumed office, the mandatory conditions for the accreditation were met and the student doctors were able to graduate.

“Since then, not less than six sets of doctors in COOUTH have emerged during Obiano’s seven years in office.’’

The adviser said that the “Gov Obiano administration set up a 64 slide, CT Scan in the State Teaching Hospital and an Oxygen Plant which makes it the highest slides so far in the South East and biggest oxygen plant in Nigeria.

Dr Onyemaechi, restated that one of the good things Obiano also brought to Anambra Health System was the introducing Healthcare Financing through the establishment of Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA)

“ASHIA is one of the biggest gifts that Gov. Willie Obiano has brought to Ndi Anambra since its establishment in 2016; it has recorded tremendous successes in the distribution of affordable and quality healthcare services to Ndi Anambra.”

According to him, in years to come, Gov. Obiano will be remembered as the Man who instituted the Anambra version of National Health Services (NHS) of the United Kingdom, which will not just serve Ndi Anambra but will lead the way toward achieving Universal Health Coverage in Nigeria. “The sustainability of the System is assured as ASHIA is established by Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme law, 2016 shielding it from effects of change in leadership of the state, as it provides mandatory health insurance cover to all residents of Anambra State.”
