Anambra State Police Command has confirmed an arrest of two suspects in connection with cult clashes in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
The suspects were allegedly involved in the murder of two at a popular Eke Awka Market.
The Police Public Relations, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, who confirmed the incident, said the clashes were between rival cult groups in the early hours of March 28, on the Ifite Awka, Zik’s Avenue in Awka South Local Government Area (LGA).
The PPRO in a statement cleared the air by saying that only two deaths were recorded.
It said that their names were being withheld for investigation purposes, noting that the two unidentified dead bodies had been deposited at a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
“Adequate security have been taken to forestall further escalation of the incident, while full-scale investigation to determine the culpability or otherwise of the two arrested persons as well as arrest of fleeing members of the cult groups have commenced.’’
In another development, following several complaints of burglary/house break-ins, shops, malls, snatching of bags, phones, other personal effects police operatives attached to Okpoko Division on March 25, while on routine patrol on Upper Iweka arrested four 4 male suspects namely.
Those apprehended are Obumneme Ugwu, 24-year-old, Uchenna Udeh, 25, Ani Amechi, 19 and Israel Isaac 21.
A statement said that preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects were members of a notorious criminal gang that had been fermenting trouble in the area for some time now.
It added that, discreet investigation was ongoing to apprehend other members of the criminal gang now on the run. “All the suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”
