Maiden edition of l ate Captain Sam Phil-Ebosie swimming competition for
schools to hold .
Lagos, March17, 2022: Two hundred children from twenty schools in Lagos State
and Ogun State will compete for laurels in forty events at the first edition of the
Captain Sam Phil-Ebosie swimming competition for schools . This is scheduled to
hold on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23 2022, at the fifty metres, eight lane
Olympic size swimming pool of the National Stadium Swimming Pool Complex,
Surulere, Lagos.
“The late Captain Sam Phil-Ebosie swimming competition for schools is designed
to contribute to the development of competitive swimmi ng in Nigeria, targeting
children between the ages of seven to seventeen years old’’said Reverend Patrick
Egbele, a member of the competition’s organising committee. He added that ‘’the
competition will host a total of four sessions, divided into mornin g and afternoon
sessions, over the two day period.’’

Trophies will be awarded to the best performing School, based on total number of
pointsscored. The best overall male and female individual swimmersin the primary
and secondary School categories will also receive prizes.
Captain Sam Phil-Ebosie who passed on ten years ago was an accomplished
swimmer and in the sixties represented his alma mater, Kings College, Lagos in
competitive swimming . He was known to have sponsored competitive swimming,
Tennis and Squash at the club levels, and several athletes in Tennis and Squash
enjoyed hissponsorship to both local and international sporting meets. Phil-Ebosie
was the major coordinator/promoter of the Dr. E.I.P Ebosie Swimming
Competition in honour of hislate father. The competition was held annually forsix
years (2005-2010) .The first edition of the Late Captain Sam Phil -Ebosie Swimming Competition for
Schools has been organized by friends of the late civil aviator to commemorate the
tenth anniversary of his passing. According to Lindsay Nkiru Phil-Ebosie daughter
of Phil-Ebosie and a member of the organising committee , ‘’my siblings and I are
delighted that friends of our father are honouring his legacy by promoting his
passion for swimming through this competition . We are grateful to them and are
optimistic that the competition would make the desired impact on competitive
swimming in the country.’’
Captain Sam Phil-Ebosie was a distinguished Pilot of the now defunct Nigeria
Airways. At the age of nineteen in 1970, Phil -Ebosie is the youngest Nigerian to
obtain a Commercial Pilot Licence. The height of his professional flying career was
when aged thirty in 1981, he emerged as the youngest ever captain in the world to
fly the wide bodied DC 10 aircraft.
